Myers house comes down

The A.N. Myers Home is almost gone for good.
Workers Thursday reduced the the Ashland County Historical Society's 408 Center St. home to a pile of rubble, including tearing down an addition at the back.
"It will probably come down pretty quickly," society board President Phil Leibolt said early Thursday afternoon. "It's all going to depend on when the guys can get to it."
Demolition at the home began Monday after an acting Wayne County judge denied a preliminary injunction which would have barred the society from tearing it down. He also dissolved a temporary restraining order issued when the society began to remove aluminum siding in December.
The society's demolition permit is set to expire in April. The society had applied in July 2006 to the Historic Preservation Board for demolition of the home and was denied. Following that action, the Center Street Historic District Homeowner's Association made an $85,000 offer on the home and the society made a counteroffer to sell for $1, with the condition the home would have to be moved.
The association then filed a complaint against the society, along with a request for the injunction and that the demolition permit be declared void.
The society's original plans called for the lot to stay green and eventually to put up a new building.
According to Leibolt, the board is studying exactly what it will do with the property and what will eventually be there. The board will proceed carefully, he said, and there's a lot of work to be done.
"There's no firm commitment on what's going to be there," Leibolt said. "In the meantime, we're not going to leave an ugly big hole in the ground. We have to take care of the lot while whatever is going to happen."
A crew from H & R Excavating demolished the A.N. Myers home on Center Street Thursday.
